Quantum computers are rapidly evolving: some years ago, we knew just about prototypes, and in September 2021, Google introduced the 53-qubit Sycamore. It means that traditional encryption methods are becoming insecure, and quantum-resistant systems will be required to protect data. We will tell you what it is and who already uses it.
What is post-quantum encryption?
Encryption algorithms not available to quantum computers date back to the 70s: the 1978 McEliece cryptosystem is still safe from quantum attacks. The main disadvantage of McEliece is its impracticality: the length of the public key is 219 bits. RSA uses 28-bit keys.
Modern post-quantum algorithms differ from ones in the 70s of the last century. Encryption keys have become more compact: Dilithium has one of the shortest key-signature pairs. KelVPN’s encryption algorithms are based on lattice theory. Cracking such keys is especially difficult: they do not lend themselves to factorization and logarithm, like AES-256 and RSA.
Why post-quantum encrypted VPNs are safer
Any VPN service encrypts traffic: if a hacker intercepts packets, he will only receive a useless set of characters. However, with the development of quantum computers, conventional encryption methods will become useless. It will be the case with the popular RSA algorithm: an ordinary semiconductor computer will take tens of thousands of years to crack a 256-bit key, and its quantum counterpart will take no more than a day.
To maintain confidentiality over the next 5–10 years, the transition to post-quantum encryption systems must begin in the near time.
Where is post-quantum encryption used?
The military was the first to notice promising new encryption systems. The American organization NIST even announced a competition among developers: the best algorithms will form the standard for post-quantum digital signature. The first contenders are Crystals-Dilithium, Falcon, and Rainbow.
Banks are also interested in quality encryption. Quantum computers threaten the security of credit cards, so banks are waiting for the standardization of post-quantum systems. The financial sector will move to new data encryption methods soon.
